Different Types of Traditional Gujrat Jewellery Styles



Gujarat is well known for its diverse culture, traditional silver jewellery and vibrant outfits. Everything from chunky silver bangles and armlets to traditional silver earrings, nose pins or nathinis, pendants or rani haar necklaces and anklets are crafted by the local Artisans.

Earrings (Known as Bali)

Gujarati women wear traditional silver earrings that includes styles such as mirror jhumkas, silver stud earrings (known as Ghudsaal in Gujarati), long silver danglers with mirror and cut work and silver earrings studded with Kundan and meena work.
Such styles of jewellery of Gujarat are easily available in areas of Porbandar, Jamnagar, Surendranagar, Ahmedabad and Kutch district. The famous areas for Gujarat jewellery making in Kutch ditrict are Bhuj, Anjar and Mundra.

Patla Bangles

In Gujarat, especially in the rural areas, men and women wear big bangles/kadas (known as Patla bangles). These bangles are crafted in Meenakari work and are adorned with gemstones, pearls, kundan, etc.

Other than patla bangles, they also wear silver armlets. These are worn on the upper arm and are made with oxidized or German silver. Just like Patla bangles, silver armlets are also worn by both men and women in the rural areas of Gujarat.

Another thing to note here is that these bangles and armlets are made with oxidized silver. Do you know why?

This is because oxidized silver is cheaper than pure silver metal; therefore oxidized jewellery doesn’t cut a hole in the pockets of the people.

Nath or Nose Pin

A Nathini is worn by both Gujarat and Rajasthani women. It consists of a big golden ring and a chain that can be tied to the hair.

Available in a plethora of flattering designs, a traditional nathini is often adorned with a precious/semi-precious gemstone such as Rose Quartz, Amethyst, Diamond, etc.

Other than nathinis, Nose pin (known as Kil) also makes for an important Gujrat jewellery styles. It is usually made with silver metal. While some women prefer a small stud, some like to wear a big nose pin adorned with floral work.

Waist Belt (Known as Kandora)

This is a type of Gujarat jewellery that is usually worn by the women on a festive occasion or a wedding. Made with silver, it elevates the overall appeal of a woman’s look.

Necklace (Known as Rani Haar)

Worn by the brides of Gujarat, a traditional Rani haar is also one of the most famous traditional jewellery of Gujarat.

It comes with a royal appeal that is just perfect to accentuate the bride’s look.

Mathapatti (Known as Damini)

Mathapatti, also known as Damini is worn by a bride at her wedding. A traditional Damini consists of a maang tikka that is worn on the forehead along with side strings that are tied to the hair.

Earrings with Hair Chains (Known as Kundan Batti)

Earrings with hair chains are called Kundan Batti. It consists of hair chains that pass over the crown of the head along with hanging earrings.
